Agouti related protein homolog

AGRP, Agouti-related protein
This gene encodes an antagonist of the melanocortin-3 and melanocortin-4 receptor. It appears to regulate hypothalamic control of feeding behavior via melanocortin receptor and/or intracellular calcium regulation, and thus plays a role in weight homeostasis. Mutations in this gene have been associated with late on-set obesity. [provided by RefSeq, Dec 2009] (from NCBI)

Regulation of the avian central melanocortin system and the role of leptin.
Dunn et al., Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom. In Gen Comp Endocrinol, Oct 2015
The avian central melanocortin system is well conserved between birds and mammals in terms of the component genes, the localisation of their expression in the hypothalamic arcuate nucleus, the effects on feeding behaviour of their encoded peptides and the sensitivity of agouti-related protein (AGRP) and pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) gene expression to changes in energy status.
