Period homolog 3

period 3, Per3, mPer3
This gene is a member of the Period family of genes and is expressed in a circadian pattern in the suprachiasmatic nucleus, the primary circadian pacemaker in the mammalian brain. Genes in this family encode components of the circadian rhythms of locomotor activity, metabolism, and behavior. Circadian expression in the suprachiasmatic nucleus continues in constant darkness, and a shift in the light/dark cycle evokes a proportional shift of gene expression in the suprachiasmatic nucleus. The specific function of this gene is not yet known. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008] (from NCBI)

Fit for Birth - the effect of weight changes in obese pregnant women on maternal and neonatal outcomes: a pilot prospective cohort study.
Wilding et al., Liverpool, United Kingdom. In Clin Obes, Feb 2016
Only 385 women had weights measured in all three study assessment periods (6-20 weeks, 20 + 1 to 32 weeks and >32 weeks gestation) while 427 women had weights measured in period 3. Individual patterns of weight gain varied widely and missing data were common and non-random.

Evaluation of mRNA markers for estimating blood deposition time: Towards alibi testing from human forensic stains with rhythmic biomarkers.
Kayser et al., Rotterdam, Netherlands. In Forensic Sci Int Genet, Jan 2016
We found that although in general mRNA-based estimation of time categories was less accurate than hormone-based estimation, the use of three mRNA markers HSPA1B, MKNK2 and PER3 together with melatonin and cortisol generally enhanced the time prediction accuracy relative to the use of the two hormones alone.

Systematic review of laparoscopic versus open surgery in the treatment of non-parasitic liver cysts.
Minni et al., Bologna, Italy. In Updates Surg, 2014
The data analysis was conducted by dividing the sample into three periods in relation to the development of laparoscopic surgery: period 1 (P1), 1990-1995 "pioneering" period of laparoscopy; period 2 (P2), 1996-2000 period of the "development of laparoscopy"; period 3 (P3), 2001-2011 period of "diffusion of laparoscopy."
Clock genes: their role in colorectal cancer.
Gazouli et al., Athens, Greece. In World J Gastroenterol, 2014
Increased expression of positive regulators of this circadian system such as BMAL1 has been related to decrease overall survival while decreased expression of negative regulators such as PER2 and PER3 is connected with poorer differentiation, increased aggressiveness and worse prognosis.
Circadian abnormalities as markers of susceptibility in bipolar disorders.
Etain et al., Créteil, France. In Front Biosci (schol Ed), 2013
Several circadian genes have been found to be associated with bipolar disorders: at least three studies have reported positive associations for each of CLOCK, NPAS2, ARNTL1, NR1D1, PER3, RORB and CSNK1epsilon.
