Mfn1, mitofusin 1, HR-2
The protein encoded by this gene is a mediator of mitochondrial fusion. This protein and mitofusin 2 are homologs of the Drosophila protein fuzzy onion (Fzo). They are mitochondrial membrane proteins that interact with each other to facilitate mitochondrial targeting. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008] (from
Moreira et al., Coimbra, Portugal. In Mol Neurobiol, Feb 2016
The inhibition of PP2A activity also promoted an alteration of the structural and spatial mitochondria network due to upregulation of mitochondrial fission (Drp1 and Fis1) and fusion (Mfn1, Mfn2 and OPA1) proteins, suggesting detrimental changes in mitochondrial dynamics.
Chan et al., Pasadena, United States. In Cell Metab, Jan 2016
Using in vivo approaches, we find that OXPHOS-dependent fibers, compared to glycolytic fibers, contain elongated mitochondrial networks with higher fusion rates that are dependent on the mitofusins Mfn1 and Mfn2.
Geisbrecht et al., Kansas City, United States. In Mitochondrion, Dec 2015
Mutations in genes that control mitochondrial fission or fusion, such as dynamin-related protein (Drp1), Mitofusins 1 (Mfn1) and 2 (Mfn2), and Optic atrophy 1 (Opa1), result in neuropathies or neurodegenerative diseases.
Horvath et al., New Haven, United States. In Cell, 2013
Interfering with mitochondrial fusion mechanisms in Agrp neurons by cell-selectively knocking down mitofusin 1 (Mfn1) or mitofusin 2 (Mfn2) resulted in altered mitochondria size and density in these cells.
Zhou et al., Tianjin, China. In Psychoneuroendocrinology, 2012
Physical exercise is identified as a preventive measure to promote mitochondrial function and expressions of mitofusin, BDNF and antioxidant in brain, so as to protect brain energy metabolism against chronic mild stress.
