This gene encodes a member of the cell death-inducing DNA fragmentation factor-like effector family. Members of this family play important roles in apoptosis. The encoded protein promotes lipid droplet formation in adipocytes and may mediate adipocyte apoptosis. This gene is regulated by insulin and its expression is positively correlated with insulin sensitivity. Mutations in this gene may contribute to insulin resistant diabetes. A pseudogene of this gene is located on the short arm of chromosome 3. Alternatively spliced transcript variants that encode different isoforms have been observed for this gene. Hdac3-deficient cultures accumulated lipid droplets in greater abundance than control cultures and expressed high levels of genes related to lipid storage (Fsp27/Cidec, Plin1) and glucocorticoid metabolism (Hsd11b1) despite normal levels of Pparγ2.
Previous studies have shown that the cell death-inducing DFF45-like effector-C (CIDEC) gene is involved in lipid storage and energy metabolism, suggesting that it is a potential candidate gene that affects body measurement traits (BMTs) and meat quality traits (MQTs).
In the acquired forms, genes such as LMNA, PPARG, CIDEC (cell-death-inducing DNA fragmentation factor a-like effector c) and PLIN1 are heavily involved in familial partial lipodystrophy (FPLD) type 2 (also known as the Dunnigan-Variety) and WRN along with RECQL5 in Werner Syndrome (WS).
