Collagen, type XIX, alpha 1

Col19a1, D6S228E, collagen, type XIX, alpha-1
This gene encodes the alpha chain of type XIX collagen, a member of the FACIT collagen family (fibril-associated collagens with interrupted helices). Although the function of this collagen is not known, other members of this collagen family are found in association with fibril-forming collagens such as type I and II, and serve to maintain the integrity of the extracellular matrix. The transcript produced from this gene has an unusually large 3' UTR which has not been completely sequenced. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008] (from NCBI)

Predicted targets for mmu-miR-466f-3P include COL1A1, COL19A1, COL11A2, COL4A1, and COL4A5 indicating that COL3A1 intronic miRNAs may regulate the expression of other collagen genes in development.

these data not only reveal that collagen XIX is expressed by central neurons, but show for the first time that a nonfibrillar collagen is necessary for the formation of hippocampal synapses

Genomic organization and characterization of the human type XXI collagen (COL21A1) gene.
Li et al., China. In Genomics, 2002
The exon/domain organization of COL21A1 resembles that of the reported FACIT collagen genes, including COL9A1, COL9A2, COL9A3, and COL19A1, suggesting that these genes may have derived from the same ancestor FACIT gene by duplication.
